Symptoms of STDs & Reproductive Health Concerns

Your reproductive health is essential – recognizing the symptoms of STIs and other reproductive health issues is a critical step toward timely diagnosis and treatment.

Symptoms of Syphilis

Syphilis is a bacterial infection that develops in stages, and symptoms can vary depending on the stage of the infection. Early detection is key to preventing long-term health issues.

  • Primary Stage: A single sore (or multiple sores) may appear, typically at the site of infection. These sores are usually painless but highly contagious.
  • Secondary Stage: Symptoms can include skin rashes, swollen lymph nodes, and flu-like symptoms such as fever and fatigue.
  • Latent and Tertiary Stages: If untreated, syphilis can cause severe complications like damage to the brain, heart, or other organs.

Symptoms of Chlamydia

Chlamydia often presents with mild or no symptoms, making it essential to get tested if you suspect exposure. If left untreated, chlamydia can lead to serious complications, including infertility. Common symptoms include:

  • Painful urination
  • Abnormal discharge from the vagina or penis
  • Pain during sex
  • Lower abdominal or pelvic pain

Symptoms of Gonorrhea

Like chlamydia, gonorrhea can sometimes be asymptomatic, but when symptoms occur, they may include:

  • Green, yellow, or white discharge from the vagina or penis
  • Painful urination
  • Pelvic pain in women or testicular pain in men
  • Rectal discomfort, discharge, or bleeding (if rectal infection is present)

Symptoms of Yeast Infection & Bacterial Vaginosis

These two conditions are not STDs but are common reproductive health concerns that can cause similar symptoms. While yeast infections are caused by an overgrowth of natural fungi, BV results from an imbalance of vaginal bacteria. Both are treatable but require different approaches, so accurate diagnosis is important.

Yeast infection symptoms:

  • Thick, white vaginal discharge resembling cottage cheese
  • Intense itching and irritation in the vaginal area
  • Burning sensation, especially during urination or sex

Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) symptoms:

  • Thin, gray, or white vaginal discharge
  • Strong, fishy odor, especially after intercourse
  • Vaginal itching or irritation

Took my 2 yr old son on New Year's Eve at 11 pm. They were very prompt and caring. Their treatment was right on the money. He had a very severe allergic reaction.

Had we not taken our son to ER Katy, it's likely he wouldn't have made it through the night!

"ER Katy Emergency Room saved our son's life. All I can say is that we went to an Urgent Care first, waited a ridiculous amount of time, and after we met [with our nurse we were] sent home. We did not feel comfortable with the "nurse" opinion; he seemed to be getting worse. At 1 AM, we rushed our son to a real doctor at ER Katy in the middle of the night and the doctor (real doctor!) and on-site X-Ray Tech found that my son's liver was cut in half. Had we not taken him to ER Katy (which was very local) it's likely he would not have made it through the night.

They reduced his pain immediately, the staff kept us sane and comfortable. The doctor made calls to transfer him to a specialist. ER Katy Doctors arranged everything. They were perfect, quick, professional, and efficient, and we owe them everything. They have doctors (real emergency room doctors) on staff 24 hours a day. I just thank God for ER Katy."
