When to Go to the ER for Excessive Bleeding

You should come to ER Katy right away for treatment if you are losing a significant amount of blood, if the bleeding cannot be controlled by direct pressure, or if the bleeding is caused by a serious injury or medical condition.

Guidelines for when bleeding should be considered an emergency include:

  • If blood is spurting from the wound with each heartbeat, indicating arterial bleeding
  • If bleeding does not stop after applying direct pressure for 10-15 minutes
  • If the wound is deep, large, or caused by a severe injury like a knife wound, gunshot, or compound fracture
  • If bleeding is accompanied by symptoms of shock like clammy skin, rapid heartbeat, shallow breathing, dizziness, or loss of consciousness
  • If foreign objects like gravel or dirt are stuck in the wound and can’t be easily removed by cleaning
  • If the wound was caused by a bite from an animal or a human
  • If bleeding is accompanied by signs of infection like swelling, pus, or red streaks spreading from the site of the injury toward the heart
  • If unexplained bleeding comes from an orifice like the mouth, ears, nose, or rectum
  • If you find blood in your stool, urine, or vomit
  • If you know you have a bleeding disorder like hemophilia or Von Willebrand disease
  • If you are taking blood thinners
  • If the bleeding comes from a recent surgical wound

If you are not sure if bleeding is severe enough to be considered an emergency, it’s best to err on the side of caution and get to ER Katy right away for evaluation and treatment. We’re equipped to determine the source and severity of the bleeding and give you the treatment you need, no matter how major or minor the condition.

Common Causes of Excessive Bleeding

Excessive bleeding can occur both externally and internally. Serious external bleeding and even minor internal bleeding can quickly become life-threatening without immediate medical attention to get it under control.

Some common ways people experience excessive bleeding include:

  • Wounds or cuts that won’t stop bleeding: A wound or cut that continues to bleed heavily after applying pressure for an extended period is considered a medical emergency. This excessive bleeding may be caused by the severity of the injury or by inhibited blood clotting caused by blood thinning medications or medical conditions. You should come to ER Katy if you experience any uncontrolled bleeding from a wound.
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding: Excessive bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract may be caused by ulcers, polyps, inflammation, hemorrhoids, fissures, or other medical conditions. You should come to ER Katy if you experience any gastrointestinal or rectal bleeding.
  • Hematomas: A hematoma is a collection of blood outside of the blood vessels that is usually caused by an injury that damages the walls of the blood vessels, which leads to blood leakage. These can occur anywhere on the body, but they are particularly concerning when they are the result of a head injury.
  • Nosebleeds: A nosebleed might not seem like an emergency, but if the nosebleed is the result of a severe injury, if you get unusually frequent nosebleeds, if the bleeding doesn’t stop after 10-20 minutes of continuous pressure, or if you are on blood thinning medications or have a bleeding disorder that inhibits clotting, come to ER Katy for diagnosis and treatment.

If you experience any type of excessive bleeding, whether internal or external, get to ER Katy right away so our board-certified emergency room doctors can treat the underlying condition and get you started on the path to healing. We’re open 24/7, you don’t need an appointment, and there is no wait time. Just walk in and get help.

How We Treat Excessive Bleeding at ER Katy

When you come to ER Katy for excessive bleeding, we’ll assess your condition and perform any tests or imaging that is necessary to determine the cause and severity of the bleeding. Depending on the nature of the bleeding, you may receive relatively minor treatments like bandaging or stitches, or more intensive treatments like surgery.

In cases of mild bleeding, treatment typically involves applying pressure to the wound and administering topical medication to help the blood clot and start the healing process. In more severe cases, such as internal bleeding or uncontrolled bleeding, surgery may be necessary to stop the bleeding and prevent further damage.

The only way to determine exactly what treatment is needed for the condition that is causing your excessive bleeding is to come to ER Katy for an examination. Excessive bleeding is a serious, life-threatening condition, so if you think your bleeding is an emergency, it’s best to get to ER Katy right away for immediate care.

We’re open 24/7 and there is never a wait time. No matter when you need us, we’re here to help.

Took my 2 yr old son on New Year's Eve at 11 pm. They were very prompt and caring. Their treatment was right on the money. He had a very severe allergic reaction.

"Had we not taken our son to ER Katy, it's likely he wouldn't have made it through the night!"

"ER Katy Emergency Room saved our son's life. All I can say is that we went to an Urgent Care first, waited a ridiculous amount of time, and after we met [with our nurse we were] sent home. We did not feel comfortable with the "nurse" opinion; he seemed to be getting worse. At 1 AM, we rushed our son to a real doctor at ER Katy in the middle of the night and the doctor (real doctor!) and on-site X-Ray Tech found that my son's liver was cut in half. Had we not taken him to ER Katy (which was very local) it's likely he would not have made it through the night.

They reduced his pain immediately, the staff kept us sane and comfortable. The doctor made calls to transfer him to a specialist. ER Katy Doctors arranged everything. They were perfect, quick, professional, and efficient, and we owe them everything. They have doctors (real emergency room doctors) on staff 24 hours a day. I just thank God for ER Katy."
